Last night I was talking to Mike about this blog. I knew it had been a while since I posted something new, but when I looked today I was surprised to see it's actually been over 2 weeks. Geesh! I haven't stopped trying stuff, I have simply failed to post anything. I've tried a couple new recipes and also a 5 minute t-shirt to vest attempt that left me less than impressed. I actually threw it away if that tells you anything. I have tons of things pinned on Pinterest, I've printed many a recipes and they're filed away in a pretty green folder in our kitchen drawer, and I've started a list of books I want to read. But anyone who knows me knows I get bored fairly quickly. Like, I'm already bored typing this post (he he) ... SO!
What I want to try next is ask you, my readers, to suggest things for me to try. I'd prefer something that you personally have NOT tried yet and have, perhaps, been meaning to. I'll be your guinea pig, sure! Some examples: craft projects, recipes, DIY home improvements, nail polishing techniques, yoga poses... or whatever :)Email me or leave a comment and tell me what you want to see me try next.I won't leave this post completely void of inspiration. A while ago I was at a friend's house and saw this nifty hair dryer/flat iron holder in her bathroom. It was constructed by her dad fairly easily. All he used was some PVC pipes and some screws to secure it to the wall. I think it's brilliant!
Okay, so what have you got for me to do?
Omg, I love that!

That's freaking awesome!! I wonder, can you paint the pvc to add a little pizzazz?
ReplyDeleteYeah you can paint pvc. It's good to sand it with some light sand paper so that the pipe isn't shiny to give the paint something to hold onto.
DeleteI wonder what it would look like glittered?!?
DeleteYou could also use mod podge to decorate it
DeleteLove the suggestions! You guys are super creative!
DeleteMake sure you primer the pvc first or else the paint will chip.
DeleteHow about some washi tape????
DeleteGreat ideas! Painting it would look great! And glitter... Yes!!
ReplyDeleteHow did you keep it on the wall?
ReplyDeleteyes how did you keep it on the wall? i want to do something like this in my craft room. I was at Home Depot the other day and wanted to get this but was not sure how to mount it on the wall. Thank you for your help.
ReplyDeleteShe screwed it through the pipe. If you look closely you can see on the right tube.
DeleteIs a PVC pipe fire/heat resistant? Just wanted to know if you can use it if your curling iron/straightner is still hot?
ReplyDeleteI had to Google it. It looks like it is.
DeleteWhat size PVC pipe did you use?
ReplyDeleteI suppose you can use any size you prefer. This wasn't my project (a friend's dad did it for her) so I don't know specifics.
DeleteYou would need to measure your hair dryer and get one the it would fit in it with enough room.
DeleteI absolutely am doing this! We have no counter space in our bathroom, and with 2 women in the house, the straightener is always out! I have been thinking we need somewhere to keep it so we can access it more easily. Thanks for the neat idea!

I'm so glad you like it! Hope it works out for you!
DeleteBETTER LET THE FLAT IRON COOL BEFORE YOU PUT IT IN THIS PLASTIC!!
ReplyDeleteMy girlfriend (whose bathroom this pic was taken in) says she doesn't let her iron cool. She puts it in there hot with no problems.
DeleteRead PVC temperature maximums. It starts to degrade at 160° F. Not that the pipe would get that hot, but it would in certain spots

Deletei think you should try this project! I want to do this, but i have no workspace to spray paint. Will hopefully when i get my own house.

enjoy!

That's a neat craft! Now I need to figure out something to paint! :)
ReplyDeleteHello! I came across your blog JUST NOW. I'm totally going to follow your posts. :-D
ReplyDeleteI have seen DIY cake/dessert platters where you take a candle stick (or something similar) and stick it to the bottom of a big plate and viola, you have a cake stand. I've not tried this yet, but would love to do so! Have you tried this yet? I'd love to see your end result if you have. :-) Have a fabulous day!
Hi Cynthia! Welcome!
DeleteI have not tried the cake stand craft, but I have a friend who did. It turned out cute! Maybe if I baked more cakes I could do that myself :)
Any idea what kind of joint is this called? I can't find it at Lowes.
ReplyDeleteI'm not familiar with plumbing supplies at all. And since this wasn't my project, I don't know. I can check, but my guess is you could show this picture to an employee at Lowe's or Home Depot and they could direct you where to find it.
DeleteMy boyfriend helped me find one and called it a "PVC Y-joint". I found it at Menard's for four dollars. Mine is 3x3x2 which is great, because the larger opening can be used for the blowdryer and the smaller opening can be used for the straightener. I love this project. I'm doing it tonight :)
Deletei bought this at lowes today...it was in the plumbing section they had one heavier variety, we initially picked up that one, then found the lighter one on the way out...now i just have to figure out how to hang it on the wall.
DeleteIt's in the plumbing section. I got mine at lowes.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! i could modge podge scrapbook paper on it to pretty it up. Sweet idea! I want it.
ReplyDeletegreat idea but won't the iron melt the plastic at all if its hot enough
ReplyDeleteShe uses it every morning and so far has had no problems.
DeleteThe fitting that you are looking for is a "Schedule 40 WYE". They come in sizes 1", 2", 3", & 4". If you want to get real creative purchase a plug to fit into the bottom and use it for toothbrushes or hair brushes. The plug would be removeable and could be cleaned as necessary.
ReplyDeleteHi! I linked this photo on my recycle-upcycle blog (http://freshtrash.blog.com/), I hope you don't mind! Feel free to stop by! Good luck with your challenge! :)
ReplyDeleteCheers!
This is AWSOME! I know where the hubs is taking me this week end thanks for sharing hugggggssssss
ReplyDeleteAnother great way to attach to the wall would be to use the 3M velcro, a couple pieces on the wall and a couple pieces on the PVC part. Then you can take it off and not damage the wall! Your landlord will appreciate it, and the velcro is plenty strong enough to hold the weight.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea!
DeleteI found the pipe fitting at our local Habitat for Humanity Re-Store for $3. It works perfectly. I put my hot iron in it and so far no melting. Thanks for a great idea!!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! I'm so happy it's working for you!
DeleteI think I would mount this using the removable wall hangers like the Command variety as the Velcro is heavy duty and they will withstand quite a load.
ReplyDeletehi this is the first time I am contacting you I was following the conversation on the tubing for hairdryer as well as for hot iron if I am correct it is a pvc y-joint plastic 3x3x2 now I would like to put a nail through it to hang on the wall how do I go about that without a drill which I don't have.
ReplyDeleteHi Nancy! I'm, by no means, an expert. I'm not sure if you can easily nail through PVC pipe or not. I only know that my friend's dad was able to screw through it for the project mentioned above. I'd recommend contacting someone in the plumbing department at your local hardware or home improvement store.
DeleteSort I'm not much help... Good luck!
For those who think they will have trouble screwing it to the wall... ask one of the employees at Lowes or Home Depot to drill a couple of holes in it for you... when you purchase it. They will do it for you... plus show you what screws you need to mount it to the wall. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is one of the better blogs i've seen for [Plastic Pipe Fitting] with lots of information and tips
ReplyDeletePVC pipe melts at 743 degrees approximately. Flat irons rarely go above 400. The plastic should be safe.

Ok question, I see most of the pictures show this sitting on a countertop. How do they keep them from falling over? The hair dryer should weigh it down while using the iron but there is not enough counter weight once you remove the dryer.
ReplyDeleteI haven't a clue how others keep theirs sitting upright. But in the case of my friend whose photo is above, she has hers screwed into the wall. I'd think that's much more secure.
DeleteI am always searching online for articles that can help me. There is obviously a lot to know about this. I think you made some good points in Features also. Keep working, great job! Italian libri PDF
